Welcome to Aluminess's Adventure Profile!
Rob Daugherty Is The Overland Gear Guy
Yuji of Jest Japan, has so many stories involving his 2001 Ford Econoline E350 4WD Sportsmobile. Owned since 2006, the van has evolved alongside his family, his work, and his approach to travel.
Based in Aichi, Japan, Yuji has spent years working with American Ford vehicles. His company Garage Jest is highly specialized in the 4×4, van, truck, and SUV segment and offers both sales and service for the category.
But this van stands apart. It is his preferred platform for adventure and has offered a constant evolution through the different chapters of his life.

A Van Built Around Family
In its early years, the van was centered around family.
When Yuji’s children were young, long summer and winter school vacations meant loading up the Sportsmobile and heading out across Japan. Camping, skiing, and sleeping in the van became part of their routine.
The destinations were never the focus.
What mattered was the time spent together—away from daily life, surrounded by nature, and connected through shared experience.
A New Chapter on the Road
As his children grew independent, the role of the van naturally shifted.
During the COVID pandemic, Yuji and his wife began traveling together, just the two of them. With fat bikes loaded on the van and no fixed itinerary, their trips became more open-ended.
They would drive without a set destination, choosing where to stop and stay as the journey unfolded.
That sense of freedom—of letting the road decide—became the foundation of their travels.

From Personal Journey to Shared Community
As travel resumed after the pandemic, something else began to change.
More customers started coming to Yuji’s shop, drawn to the same lifestyle he had been living for years. What began as a personal pursuit grew into a shared experience.
Today, many of those trips include fellow travelers and customers, forming a small community connected by overlanding, van life, and a shared appreciation for time spent outdoors.
Together, they explore destinations across Japan—less as individual trips, and more as a continuation of the same journey.

Built With Purpose
Yuji’s Sportsmobile is equipped with a focused set of Aluminess components:
These additions are more than just appearance upgrades and serve a clear purpose. Everything was designed function forward offering protection and utility.
For long-distance travel and remote access, reliability matters. The ability to move confidently, without second-guessing the equipment, is what allows the journey to stay fluid.
For Yuji, Aluminess has delivered exactly that.
The components have proven their strength, durability, and consistency over time, becoming a dependable part of every trip.

What Van Life Means
For Yuji, van life comes down to something simple:
Stepping away from everyday life.
Time spent with family.
Time spent with friends.
Time spent in places that feel different from routine.
Japan offers a wide range of landscapes—coastlines, mountains, forests, and quiet, lesser-known locations that don’t appear on typical travel routes.
The van provides access to those places, but more importantly, it allows the experience to happen on its own terms.

Looking Ahead
After years of exploring Japan, Yuji has set his sights on something bigger.
His goal is to bring this same van, the one that has carried his family, his business, and his experiences, and to the United States and travel across the country.
Not as a new beginning, but as a continuation.
The same vehicle.
The same mindset.
Just a different landscape.
